I believe the hoard was broken up by Viking raiders and burried as they travelled on to their next raid/s. They would not need the swords but evidence from other finds indicates that valuables were often broken up to be devided amonst the raiders. They never returned because they may have been killed by Anglo Saxons who treated them (understandably) quite badly.
